Onlookers throng the castle’s ramparts. The weight of expectation threatens to pull the birdman from his perch.

Have I made a mistake?

“See you in France!” he forces out. His wax wings shudder.

Orange shafts of light split the sky behind the Fife hills and the birdman jumps into nothing.
